Walking improves fertility in men and women, according to new studies.

Walking is one of the most accessible and effective forms of exercise, and its impact on health has been widely studied. Surprisingly, this simple physical activity can improve fertility in both men and women by influencing essential biological processes for reproduction. Various scientific studies have shown that walking regularly can optimize sperm quality in men and increase the chances of conception in women.

Below, we analyze three key studies supporting these findings and explain how incorporating walking into your daily routine can be an effective strategy to enhance fertility.

1. Walking improves male fertility: Sperm quality and quantity.

A study conducted by Urmia University in Iran, titled "The effects of three different exercise modalities on markers of male reproduction in healthy subjects: a randomized controlled trial", published in the journal Reproduction, examined how exercise influences sperm health.

The research included 261 healthy men aged 25 to 40, divided into two groups: one maintained their usual routine, while the other incorporated treadmill walking with a progressive 12-week training program.

Key study results:

8.3% increase in semen volume.

12.4% improvement in sperm motility

17.1% increase in normal sperm morphology.

These benefits are attributed to the reduction of oxidative stress, one of the main factors affecting sperm quality. Moderate physical activity, such as brisk walking, helps regulate metabolism and optimize sperm production, thus improving conception chances.

2. Walking increases female fertility: Study by Boston University

Boston University conducted a study titled "Body mass index, physical activity and fecundability in a North American preconception cohort study", published in Fertility and Sterility. The research analyzed the physical activity habits of 3,628 women aged 18 to 40 who were trying to conceive without using fertility treatments.

Key findings:

Women who engaged in more than 5 hours per week of moderate physical activity, such as walking or cycling, had an 18% higher chance of getting pregnant.

In overweight women, the benefits were smaller but still present.

In women with a normal weight, intense exercise could have a slightly negative effect on fertility.

Conclusion:

The researchers highlighted that physical activity improves fertility by regulating metabolism and reducing inflammation, which is especially beneficial for overweight or obese women. However, for those with a normal weight, balance seems to be key: moderate exercise is ideal, whereas excessive activity could negatively affect ovulation.

3. Walking after a miscarriage improves chances of conceiving.

Another relevant study was conducted by the University of Massachusetts Amherst and published in the journal Human Reproduction. The research focused on 1,214 women aged 18 to 40 who had experienced a miscarriage and were trying to conceive again.

Key discoveries:

Women who walked for at least 10 minutes a day had a higher chance of getting pregnant.

The positive effects of walking were most noticeable in overweight or obese women.

The study’s lead researcher, Brian Whitcomb, emphasized that lifestyle factors, such as diet and physical activity, directly influence fertility at a molecular level. Small changes, like incorporating daily walks, can make a significant difference in the chances of conception.

Other benefits of walking for fertility.

In addition to its direct impact on fertility, walking provides multiple general benefits that support reproductive health:

✅ Hormonal regulation: Improves insulin sensitivity, which is crucial for women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

✅ Stress reduction: Lowers cortisol levels, promoting optimal hormonal balance for conception.

✅ Improved blood flow: Enhances circulation in the pelvic area, optimizing the function of reproductive organs.

✅ Weight control: Helps maintain a healthy body mass index (BMI), which is key for fertility.

How to incorporate walking into your daily routine?

To reap these benefits, intense training is not necessary. Simply follow these recommendations:

✔️ Frequency: At least 5 days a week.

✔️ Duration: Between 30 and 45 minutes per session.

✔️ Intensity: Walk at a brisk pace, meaning a speed where you can talk comfortably but notice a slight increase in breathing.

✔️ Variation: Include different terrains, such as gentle inclines or stairs, to improve endurance.

✔️ Companionship: Walking with a partner or friends can help maintain motivation and consistency.

Conclusion: A simple habit with a big impact on fertility

Incorporating regular walks into your daily routine is a simple and effective strategy to enhance fertility in both men and women. Beyond its general health benefits, walking can improve sperm quality, increase pregnancy chances, and help women recover after a miscarriage.
