Photographs before and after motherhood: How the sparkle in a woman’s eyes changes.

Have you ever wondered how a woman changes when she becomes a mother? We’re not just talking about the obvious physical changes, but about that deep transformation that happens within—the one that reflects in her eyes.

Lithuanian photographer Vaida Razmislavičė has captured this extraordinary metamorphosis in her project Becoming A Mother, a moving series that invites us to witness the before and after of 33 women on their journey into motherhood.

The story behind the lens.

"When you hold your first baby in your arms, no one prepares you for what’s to come," Vaida confesses, sharing her own experience. "I didn’t feel that instant maternal instinct that everyone talks about. Real motherhood is a continuous journey of learning, self-discovery, and, most importantly, trusting yourself beyond the opinions of others."

The project was born as a response to those voices that see motherhood as an obstacle. Vaida, who managed to complete a master's degree while raising two children, wanted to prove that life does not stop with the arrival of a baby—it simply transforms into something deeper and more meaningful.

The magic Is in the details.

Like passport portraits, each photograph focuses on the most revealing feature: the eyes. "I removed everything that could be distracting, even the baby bump," Vaida explains. "I wanted to capture that subtle yet powerful change that happens in a woman's gaze when she becomes a mother."

And she certainly succeeded. In every pair of photographs, we can see how the gaze transforms—there is more depth, more wisdom, more love, and yes, also more exhaustion. But above all, there is an inner strength that had previously remained dormant.

The numbers behind the story.

The 33 brave women who participated in the project brought 36 little ones into the world (including three pairs of twins!): 20 boys and 16 girls. Each story is unique, each transformation is personal, but they all share that special glow in their eyes that only motherhood can bring.

A project that also gave birth.

"This project was like a pregnancy in itself," reflects Vaida. "I couldn’t control it; I just had to trust that it would arrive at the right moment." And it did.

Through these photographs, the artist not only documented the transformation of other women but also found healing for her own experiences as a mother.

Motherhood is a journey that transforms every fiber of our being. It’s not just about giving life—it’s about being reborn yourself. As Vaida puts it, "when a woman becomes a mother, her inner energy awakens, her intuition sharpens, and her wisdom reaches new dimensions."

These photographs are more than just portraits—they are a testament to the transformative power of maternal love, a tribute to all the mothers who, day after day, discover new strengths they never knew they had.

At Mater Clinic, we believe that motherhood is a gift, but also a challenge. It is a journey traveled with an open heart and an open mind. And while no one is born knowing how to be a mother, the transformation happens naturally because every woman finds her own way to love, care for, and guide her child.

Every gaze tells a story. Every mother is unique. And in every transformation, there is an indescribable beauty, because motherhood does not just change the body—it changes the soul.

At Mater Clinic, we are here to support you every step of the way on this incredible journey. We deeply understand the transformation that motherhood entails and accompany women at every stage of this path, providing specialized support and a comprehensive approach that embraces both physical and emotional well-being.

Being a mother is not about losing yourself, as some might think, but about rediscovering yourself in a new version—stronger, wiser, and, even when exhausted, infinitely richer in love.
