Natural and technological contraception: The new saliva test that detects your fertility at home.

In the world of women's health, technological innovations continue to evolve, and recently, a revolutionary device made in the United Kingdom has emerged, designed to help women, manage their fertility and, more recently, as a contraceptive method.

How does the device work?

This device measures progesterone in the saliva, allowing it to identify the fertile days of the menstrual cycle. To do so, the user takes a small sample of her saliva each day and places it on a reactive strip connected to a reader. This reader syncs with an app on her mobile phone, and through the analysis of hormonal levels, the system can determine the phases of the menstrual cycle. Although it was originally developed to monitor fertility, recent studies have shown that it can also serve as a contraceptive method.

One key advantage is that, unlike other hormonal tests, saliva is not affected by factors such as stress, fever, or sweat, making it an interesting alternative for those seeking a more natural way to manage their fertility without resorting to invasive or hormonal methods.

Effectiveness as a contraceptive method.

A study involving more than 200 women showed that the device has an annual contraceptive effectiveness of 92%. This means that approximately 8 out of every 100 women could become pregnant after one year of use. Although this rate is lower than that of more traditional methods such as condoms or intrauterine devices (IUDs), it remains a viable option for those seeking a more natural, hormone-free approach.

A viable option for all women?

No, this device is not suitable for all women. Those with irregular cycles or who have recently been pregnant or are breastfeeding may get less reliable results. It is also recommended to wait between two and three months after stopping hormonal contraceptives before starting to use the device, to allow hormone levels to stabilize and ensure more accurate readings.

Additionally, while the device has been approved in some European countries, it is not yet widely available in all markets. This may limit its accessibility, so it is important to consider local options before deciding on this type of technology.

Pros and Cons.

Advantages:

Non-invasive: It does not require medical procedures and can be used from the comfort of your home.

Hormone-free: Ideal for those who prefer to avoid the side effects of hormonal contraceptives.

Personalized monitoring: Offers women the opportunity to better understand their menstrual cycle and manage their fertility in a more natural way.

Disadvantages:

Limited effectiveness: While 92% effectiveness is promising, it is still lower than traditional methods such as condoms or IUDs.

Not suitable for irregular cycles: Irregularities in the menstrual cycle can affect the accuracy of the readings.

Limited access: Its availability remains restricted and is not widely available.

This device represents one of the many technological innovations that are transforming the way women manage their reproductive health. By offering a hormone-free, personalized, and easy-to-use option, it opens new doors for those who prefer natural methods without sacrificing comfort and control over their fertility. While it is not a substitute for more conventional contraceptive methods, it is a valid alternative for many women seeking different options that are more connected to their own bodies.

This method is still not widely used, as it is a new device that has not yet been implemented on a large scale.
